First thing’s first. YSL Beaute’s Mascara Vinyl Couture is meant to be a top coat mascara, which means it isn’t meant to show up on lashes like a thick coat of your usual mascara.

The brand recently launched a range of eight unexpected colours of this top coat mascara last month in March, and sent us all the colours to try.

We were excited, especially after seeing pics of the mascara being worn by the brand’s spokesperson, It girl, Staz Lindes. She looked totally cool with different coloured mascara on the top and bottom lashes.

Our top faves were the pink and the blue shades, which really made our lashes look amazing. We’re definitely stashing them into our makeup pouches to amp up our lashes whenever we feel like we want to do something a little more fun.

The green and the gold were subtler alternatives with an interesting hint of colour, especially when it catches the light.

The other shades weren’t as exciting because they were the usual black, brown and black sparkle, which is a black with a bit of shimmer in it. There was also a dark purple shade which turned out really dark on our lashes and looked like your regular black mascara. However, these shades really helped to make lashes look glossy and defined, if nothing else.

One tip to note about these mascara top coats – put on a coat of your usual black or dark brown mascara first, let it dry then apply these top coat colours so that the colour shows up best.

Have fun playing with the various colours, pair them with matching or contrasting eyeshadow or just skip eyeshadow entirely and let your lashes have the spotlight.

YSL Beaute Mascara Vinyl Couture is available at $55 each, at all YSL Beaute counters.
