Review: A non-invasive facial to lift and firm up skin

If you find lasers too intense and a normal facial too mild, this is the perfect in-between treatment for you

At some point in your life, fine lines are going to appear on your face and your skin is going to slack. It's inevitable because skin loses elasticity as you age; it also loses its ability to retain moisture, which causes skin dryness and emphasises the appearance of fine lines.

Drastic measures such as plastic surgery, or going for a thread lift or fillers may not be for everyone. And while lasers can help in skin rejevenation, they tend to be pricier (because they can only be administered by practising doctors) and can have a downtime of a day to a week or more.

The other option you can consider: light therapy. It’s not as intense as lasers, but it employs the same logic of treating the skin with light emitted at various wavelengths to address different skin concerns. For example, red light reduces skin inflammation; blue light helps kill acne-causing bacteria; intensed pulsed light (IPL) helps with skin pigmentation, uneven skin tone, redness and age lines, although it is not recommended for people with deeper skin tones.

The next type of light therapy you should know: near infrared (NIR) light. It works like red light therapy, except it is invisible and penetrates deeper into skin. At wavelengths approximately between 700 and 1,200nm, NIR delivers energy to cells and heats them up to boost blood circulation, and encourage fibroblasts to repair skin repair and regeneration, and the production of collagen. This means firmer and more supple skin.

The Beam Me Up NIR Lifting Facial is only available at Spa Esprit Beauty Emporium.

A new facial to try

Spa Esprit’s Beam Me Up NIR Lifting Facial works like your normal facial. The therapist starts the session with aromatherapy, guiding you to take deep breaths of the relaxing scent of the essential oil. This is followed by double cleansing to remove makeup, grime and other impurities from your skin. Toner is then applied to rehydrate your skin and balance your skin’s pH levels.

After all this prepping, a layer of treatment oil is applied on skin to reduce friction between your skin and the NIR handpiece while it is moved over your face in a sweeping motion. You’ll feel a warming sensation as the light heats up the skin tissues to stimulate skin cells’ regenerative abilities. You don’t have to worry about your skin overheating as a cooling contact is inbuilt into the NIR handpiece to regulate the temperature of the treatment. After 25 to 30 minutes of the NIR treatment, the therapist will do gentle extractions on your skin. You can opt out of it if you’re afraid of aggravating your skin.

A cooling herbal mask that’s customised for your skin type is applied to your face, accompanied by a comfortable neck and shoulder massage to round off the facial. Before you leave the spa, the therapist applies a layer of moisturiser and sunscreen and you’re good to go.

Spa Esprit recommends six sessions, two to four weeks apart to see the best results. You can go for yearly follow-up treatments to prolong the effects of the therapy.

Things to note

You should avoid hot baths, saunas and steam rooms in the next 48 hours following the treatment. Don’t go sun tanning or do intensive or rough sports either. If you use acid-based skincare, you should avoid it for the next two days too.

You can apply makeup and continue with your regular activities, but remember to apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 daily.

This facial is also not recommended for pregnant women or people who’ve just had an invasive treatment like botox or filler in the past week to month.

Verdict

“Post-treatment, the appearance of my pores and fine lines look less obvious. I like that there is zero downtime, and you can go for dinner right after the facial. The level of heat the NIR induces in my skin is comfortable – I even dozed off when the therapist was doing the NIR light therapy for me. Since the full results can take up to half a year to develop, I would recommend swopping your usual facial with this treatment so you can see more obvious results.” – Kayce, beauty writer
