US beauty brand Clinique’s Moisture Surge 72-hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator is a gel-cream that promises to moisturise skin for 72 hours – even if you’ve used it just once, and after you’ve washed it off.

It also claims to help retrain skin to hold on to moisture and produce more of its own “with aloe water and caffeine”. Like a lot of moisturisers now, it’s a multi-tasker and can be used as a five-minute mask (just apply a thicker layer), cuticle treatment, frizz tamer (yes, for your hair!) and a dewy highlighter

What we say

It’s hard to road-test the moisturiser’s 72-hour efficacy without doing something that we can’t imagine doing – not moisturising for three days. Especially since the person testing (i.e., me) has combination skin that is constantly flushed, prone to eczema at the chin, and can’t do without any moisturiser. So, I did the next best thing: I used the product on just the left side of my face on Friday night and skipped moisturising on that side until Monday night – so I can do a real comparison.

Verdict

The left half of my face didn’t feel dry after three whole days of testing, but neither did it feel as hydrated as the right half that was moisturised twice daily. The deal-sealer: The skin around my eczema-prone chin did not feel dry or flake, which for me meant that the moisturiser did work.
