Video hair and makeup: Elain Lim

When Fenty Beauty, Rihanna’s makeup line, launched globally on 8 September at 10am, the makeup world was abuzz. I’ve got to admit, the hype kind of got to me too and I excitedly got hold of the collection to review. Check out our Beauty In A Minute video to see my top three picks, hopefully it will help you decide if you should get in on Fenty Beauty too.

Products reviewed:

Face Base

Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Longwear Foundation, $50, and Portable Contour & Concealer Brush, $36. The foundation is fluid and spreads easily. The soft matte finish makes it look natural on the skin. However, I found that the colour oxidises slightly and I ended up looking a shade darker than when I started out. The retractable brush is very handy to carry around in my makeup pouch but is best for blending pressed powders like the Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter or Blotting Powder as the bristles are too soft for blending cream or liquid formulas.

Eyes

Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter Duo in Girl Next Door & Chic Phreak, $50, and Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife, $50. I used this pink hued highlighter duo and the brand’s star product – the gold Trophy Wife highlighter – as eyeshadows. The pinkish duo suited my skin tone well and I like that there are two different finishes, one more shimmery and the other with a soft shine, which provided a nice dimensional effect on my lids. I used the gold powder as an accent shade on the inner corners of my eyes. These colours are meant to be for the face though, like as highlighters or blushers, so don’t experct them to be as intense when doubled up to be used as eyeshadows. Thankfully the brand is coming up with eyeshadows real soon! Just scroll down to find out more about the Fenty Beauty Galaxy Collection coming out soon.

Contour

Match Stix Matte Skinstick in Walnut, $37. A good contour product that’s easy to use. Just swipe under cheekbones and blend with a brush or fingertip.

Blush

Match Stix Shimmer Skinstick in Trippin, $37. I love this as a blusher. It is a happy, glowy pink with a shimmer finish that is really pretty. When I apply it to the apples of my cheeks it doubles as a highlighter too.

Lips

Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, $31. I was a bit doubtful about this lip gloss that was said to be a universal shade for all skin tones… until I tried it on a few of my colleagues. It made every pair of lips look instantly glamorous with a hint of natural pinkish colour.

There was so much buzz surrounding the brand launch on 8 September, which was all kept top secret, not a single product picture could be found anywhere on the web prior to the launch (except teaser pictures on the official Fenty Beauty instagram page), thanks to airtight non-disclosure agreements that all members of the media had to sign before previewing the line.

In Singapore, the launch happened at Sephora Ion Orchard and the queue started at around 10pm the night before.

The week following the launch, in countries like the US, there were reports that the darker foundation shades had sold out. Here in Singapore, the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer, Pro Filt’r Instant Retouch Primer and Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter in Trophy Wife were some of the first items to sell out a week after the launch. At this moment, the brand is unable to comment on when stocks of some sold-out products will be replenished, but currently the sephora.sg website allows you to waitlist them.

And if that’s not all, Fenty Beauty is also releasing The Galaxy Collection consisting of OTT, glitter-infused eyeshadow palette, eyeliners, lip glitters and lipsticks on Friday 13 October. We predict another mad rush for this colourful, cosmic collection because it is touted as a “hyper-limited” line.

Fenty Beauty Galaxy Collection, from $82 for the Eyeshadow Palette, $30 for the Eclipse 2-in-1 Glitter Eyeliner, to $28 for the Lip Glitter and Hyper-Glitz Lipstick.
