One of the easiest ways to nail this look is a single wash of colour all over your lids. Over time, it’s become apparent to us that there are some colours that somehow look better than others, and your skin tone plays a large role in this decision. The spectrum ranges from pink tones to beige ones, with some peach tones making an appearance along the way. It’ll take some trial and error to find your most flattering shade, but one helpful tip is to pick a matte or satin shadow (avoid shimmers as these can draw focus to crepe-y skin), and keep to the same undertones as your skin. So if you have cooler undertones, feel free to go as pink as you’d like. Golden undertones can even go with a bronzey shade if you have medium or deep-toned skin. Try the latest Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette ($76) which has a mixture of pinks, neutrals, and peach tones; or a more compact option like the Natural Matte palette ($53).

If bare-faced and au naturel is your favourite look, you’ll be able to get by with some stripped-down nude-to-neutral palettes. Urban Decay’s Naked Basics palette ($45 for five shadows) has a couple of all-over light neutral shades and a couple of darker ones that give you the option to define the outer corner of your eyes should you choose; we recommend the Basics 2 palette if you have deeper skin. If you want a larger shade range that’s not too expensive, Zoeva’s Nude Spectrum Palette ($59 for 15 shadows) is a keeper. It’s lightweight and super compact, meaning it isn’t going to take up lots of space, and the eyeshadows are decently pigmented. It also has a mix of shimmers so you always have the option of amping things up.

If bronzed is all you’re after, you don’t even really need an eyeshadow palette. The Tarte Tarteist Pro Glow Highlight & Contour Palette ($80) has four highlighters and two contour shades, and come in a lovely mix of colours for light to medium skin tones. One of the contours is actually offered in a cream formulation, so you can still keep your look fresh and dewy if you prefer to. The brand Too Faced also has some gorgeous bronzing products like the Cocoa Contour Kit ($62) or the Sweethearts Bronzer ($42), depending on whether you prefer a shimmery bronze or a more matte one. Use the same bronzer shade to contour your eyes and warm up your face for more colour and dimension.

Some people might tell you that shimmer or glitter isn’t daytime appropriate, but unless it’s an actual HR-imposed restriction at work, you should be allowed to rock whatever eye look you like. Some palettes like the new Tarte Tarteist Pro Amazonian Clay Palette ($82) cover all your bases with neutral shadows in addition to the bolder, richer and more shimmery shades. Others like Kat Von D’s Serpentina Eyeshadow Palette ($73) or Urban Decay’s Moondust palette are just straight up shimmery palettes, which don’t often function well on their own, so we recommend only gunning for those as accent pieces if you’ve already got your neutral shadows covered.

This look is a step up from the soft and feminine look, but not quite as done up as full-on glam. It doesn’t have to be shimmery, but what sets it apart from being straight-up soft and feminine is that the eye look is more layered and detailed. Too Faced has a Boudoir Eyes palette ($53) that contains soft shimmery pinks and some darker shades for depth and more impact. Quite frankly, any substantial palette like the Naked palettes or their equivalent will allow you to create this look. Attempting a dark and smoky eye can be intimidating to most, but for those of you who embrace it full-heartedly and can’t get enough of a sultry and intense eye look, we highly recommend stocking up on a palette that is as fearless as you are, like Urban Decay’s Naked Smoky palette ($83) or the beautiful Modernist Eye Shadow Palettes from Hourglass ($91). The trick to nailing the smoky eye is making sure you lay down some skin-tone shades to blend out any harsh edges. To get your look really dark and inky (especially when your eyeshadows just won’t build up opaque enough), consider layering a black eye crayon underneath.
