Beauty Picks

The beauty products that you should be using in 2018 based on your New Year’s resolutions

New year, new you

Resolutions are great in theory but they tend to get abandoned when it starts to feel like a chore.  But they are a good way for us to adopt better habits that is why we continue to make them year after year. So before the ball drops, read on for our beauty picks that will make it easier for you to achieve your New Year’s resolution.

I will wash my brushes more regularly

Makeup brushes are a hotbed for dirt and spot-inducing bacteria if you don’t wash them often. If your makeup brushes are full of dirt and grime, your pores could get clogged which in turn causes your skin to breakout. Make it a point to give your brushes a deep clean, at least once a week and your skin will thank you for it.

To make your brush washing ritual a breeze, stash some alcohol based anti-bacterial wipes at your vanity closet so you can disinfect and clean you brushes before and after you use them. By doing so, makeup residue doesn’t stay on your brushes for a long time and it’s easier to get rid of them when you next wash your brushes. Alternatively, pick up a brush cleaning spray like the Make Up For Ever ($35) and spray it directly on dry brushes before brushing it onto a tissue/paper towel/towel to get rid of the makeup. Bonus: it dries up instantly so you can clean your brushes before each use.

I will get seven to eight hours of sleep every night

Getting less than the recommended seven to eight hours of beauty sleep on a regular basis can result in lackluster skin, fine lines and dark eye circles. When you are sleep deprived, your body also releases more of the stress hormone (cortisol) which can break down collagen in your skin, the protein that helps to keep your skin smooth and supple. That is why it is always important for you to get at least seven hours of sleep a night.

Before you doze off, however, don’t forget to slather on a nourishing, overnight treatment like the Clinique Moisture Surge Overnight Mask ($59) or the Mamonde Calming Hydro Sleeping Mask ($30). When you sleep, your skin can lose a lot of water, by glopping on a night treatment, you are not only hydrating your skin but also creating a barrier to seal in other products like your moisturiser and serum that are applied underneath.

I will save money

If you find yourself shelling out big bucks in the name of beauty, look for multi-tasking products to get the best bang for your buck.

For example, you can look for lippies that double up as cheek stains like the Becca Beach Tint ($38), makeup sticks with highlighter on one side and contour on the other such as the 3CE Duo Contour Stick ($37), and foundations that also work as a primer like the Tarte BB Tinted Treatment 12-Hour Primer Broad Spectrum Sunscreen SPF30 ($56). These multi-taskers are also great for travelling if you want to pack light.

I will be less stressed

Work, meetings and long commutes can leave you with little time to relax and decompress from the stresses of everyday life. Take some time out of each week to recharge and forget the daily grind.

Apart from scheduling some “me time”, you can also look for products such as the This Works Stress Check Breathe in ($25) that are formulated with essential oils to help you feel better during stressful times and situations.
