Roses have been used in beauty elixirs for thousands of years. But they haven’t been considered terribly trendy or exciting since our grandmothers’ time. All that’s changing now, and the precious powerhouse ingredient that is rose essential oil is quietly making its way into our beauty routines.

How does it help your skin? Rose essential oil is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. It’s distilled from two common rose species: rosa damascena (Bulgarian or damask rose) and rosa centifolia (Moroccan rose). It’s used to soften skin and help maintain its moisture levels.  It’s a great inflammatory: It helps calm and soothe irritated and sensitive skin. It’s also antibacterial, so you can safely use it if you have acne.

Here’s the latest crop of rose skincare products for you to consider:

For very dry or mature skin: Apply Lancome Absolue Precious Cells Nourishing and Revitalizing Rose Mask ($285) twice a week for 10 minutes each time for plumper, smoother skin.

For a dehydrated eye area: Canvas Rose Otto Overnight Eye Contour Mask ($131) is a gel mask that’s light enough for daily use.

Did you know? It takes three tones of rose petals to produce 1kg of rose essential oil.

To soothe itchy, dry skin: Mamonde Rose Water Gel Cream ($30) calms irritation, and can also be applied – using a cotton pad – as a renewing toner to loosen up flaky skin for easy removal.

For a hydration boost: Dior Prestige La Lotion Essence de Rose (155) is a treatment toner – use it after cleansing for suppleness and softness. It’s for all skin types.
